Looking for more privacy and visual interest in their backyard, the Brockmeyers brought us in to build out the planting. We shaped 3,000 square feet of new mulch beds and set 11 new trees — three Blue Spruce, five Emerald Green Arborvitae, and two Green Giants for a full, year-round screen, plus an apple tree for a change of season. Everything was finished with brown dyed mulch to tie the beds together.

The long distance from the street to the backyard was a key challenge to consider in planning the landscape. The homeowner wanted to create privacy with trees while keeping the yard aesthetically pleasing, balancing the need for screening with the overall look of the space.
Where the yard started
Our design plan centered on creating interesting planting bed shapes in the backyard to provide a setting for the privacy trees. We chose mulch instead of rock to add contrast, pairing it with the shaped beds to bring visual interest beyond the trees themselves. Strategically placed uplights added another layer to the design, bringing interest to the backyard at night.
Colors & textures
A mix of greens and blues from the evergreens pairs with a pop of red from the apple tree. Brown-dyed mulch adds contrast and a natural texture to the planting palette.
